BOTOX® , Restylane® & PERLANE ® for Cosmetic Therapy

BOTOX® is a powerful medicine used to treat and improve the appearance of worry lines, wrinkles, laugh lines, facial expression lines, neck banding, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

BOTOX® is a synthetic derivative of botulism toxin, which is a protein that weakens and inactivates muscles. By using advanced technology and medical technique, physicians are now using this once nocuous substance as a truly beneficial medication. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled; the untreated facial muscles will continue to contract in a normal fashion, therefore allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.

Restylane is a non-animal product (hyaluronic acid in the form of a crystal-clear gel) that is used for its filling effect to smooth the facial wrinkles. Perlane servest the same purpose, yet utilizes a larger molecule than does Restylane.

Are these products safe Safe?

While BOTOX® is a potent medicine in high concentrations, it is used in very small quantities with a high margin of safety. Depending on the extensiveness of the facial expressions to be treated, up to about 100 units of BOTOX® per session is used. BOTOX® is also safe because the effect of BOTOX® disappears in about 3-4 months with complete recovery of the affected muscles.

Restylane & Perlane are also very safe with almost no reports of any allergic reactions.

Facial Wrinkles?

Facial wrinkles give a person an older appearance, happy, angry, tired or sad expression. The more emotions one tends to express, the deeper these wrinkles and lines can become. Wrinkles radiating from the corner of the eyes caused by smiling, laughing or squinting are especially distressing to some individuals.

Previously, no reasonable medical or surgical solution improved these problems, due to the strong underlying muscles. Even with the deepest chemical peels or laser resurfacing techniques, the recurrence of these lines around the eyes had been continual mystery. Same is true for the frown lines on the forehead, between the brows, and the wolf lines on the nose.

Now, BOTOX® injections are used in conjunction with resurfacing procedures, and/or fillers such as Restylane. BOTOX® will function as the agent to prevent the occurrence of wrinkles by relaxing the underlying muscles; and thus it smoothes the skin and allows our patients to truly look younger.

Nasolabial Folds

This area is most dynamic when talking, smiling and eating. As one ages, both muscle and fat are lost from this area. Consequently, this area is not an ideal location for correcting by Botox®. Nonetheless, with advanced technologies, a new filling agent has been devised, that allows for a high safety margin, and, most importantly, patient satisfaction. These agents, Restylane and Perlane allow our physican to restore the area around your mouth, without the risk of losing any of your most important expressions (i.e. a smile), as those clinics that solely use Botox®.

What Results Can I Expect? For How Long?

If dynamic wrinkles make you look older than you are, treatment with BOTOX® will relax these areas and give you a more youthful and pleasant appearance. This procedure can not improve wrinkles due to natural aging of skin and/or sun-damaged skin, since they are unrelated to facial muscle contractions. BOTOX® injections will not improve sagging skin or replace the need for a facelift or brow lift, if truly necessary. Nor will our staff act otherwise. Be assured, with consultation at our office, you will know if Botox® is a proper plan for you.

BOTOX® lasts for about 3-4 months. Treatment plans may be tailored to fit your schedule to ensure continual effectiveness.

Who Should Not Use BOTOX®?

Although there have been no reports of birth defects with this medicine, no pregnant patients will be treated. Having carefully reviewed medical literature, and considered all available evidence, our staff physician has concluded that Botox® may not be suitable for individuals who are:

• nursing mothers; • with a history of neuromuscular disease (e.g. multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis); • are on Accutane, or drugs that interfere with nerve impulses to muscles; • know they are allergic to Botulism Toxin or Albumin.

What Are the Alternatives To BOTOX®?

Alternatives to BOTOX® include a growing list of wrinkle filling agents such. These include fat from your own body, bovine collagen-based fillers such as Zyderm, Zyplast, Artecoll, Fascian, Cymetra, AlloDerm, human collagen fillers such as CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast, and Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane and Perlane. Radiance or radiesse is a new calcium hydroxylapatite filler. Some of these filling agents are FDA approved, and others are used as “off label” products.
