SCLEROTHERAPY is technique that involves the injection of Sclerosing solutions into abnormal looking vessels (e.g. spider veins or varicose veins) for treatment. Developement of spider veins could be due to heredity, hormonal changes and pregnancy, prolonged sitting or standing, weight gain or due to unknown reason. Varicose veins are larger than spider veins and darker and tend to bulge. Varicose veins are also more prone to cause pain. Women are more prone to varicose veins than men. (Please note: we do not recommend treatment of these abnormalities during pregnancy or lactation.) Several medications are available for this technique including hypertonic saline and sclerovein. These therapies function by causing an inflammatory reaction in the vessels that eventually causes them to collapse and resolve. Sclerotherapy can not be used for all types of varicose or spider veins. Our on staff physician, Dr. Kamrava, will be more than happy to discuss the properness of this therapy for the results that you seek. Possible risks and complications Sclerotherapy is usually considered a safe and low risk procedure. Some of the risks include, but are not limited to, infection, bleeding, allergic reaction, pain, excessive blood clots, telangiectatic matting, and skin scars/pigmentation (the pigmentation most often gradually disappears within few months). Instruction before treatment We recommend you not to use any sun block creams or moisturizers on the day of your procedure. Please bring shorts to wear during the procedure and also compression hoses to be worn after the procedure. Instructions after treatment It is advised that patients wear compression hoses after the procedure for about a week. You can remove the compression tape after 48 hours. You might feel some itching or cramps after the procedure, which are usually temporary and subside. Please do not scratch the treated areas. You should avoid running, jogging or participating in any activities that moves your leg too much for about 2 weeks after these procedures. We encourage you to walk after the procedure to prevent clot formation.
LASER VARICOSE THERAPY is another alternative to treat the varicose veins and is usually very tolerable and effective in treating varicose veins too
